Game Summary for Padres VS Twins
Sunday July 27th. 2008 at Golis Park
In the 11th week of the season, the Pads
the second place Twins, who the Pads had narrowly defeated in the
2nd game of the year in a wild one, 14-13
in the bottom of the ninth. Here the Pads were looking for a
barometer test, to see how they stacked up against one of the better
teams in the league. In the top of the first, things started out
positively for the Friars, as they scratched out a run. JMash
singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball, and then
Bruno singled him in to give the Pads the
early lead. Mike Baldwin got the start
for the Padres after impressively shutting
down the Mets in fine fashion in week 10. In the bottom of the
first, Baldwin got off to a rough start
however, giving up a run on a walk, an error and a single to left
before settling down nicely and cruising in and out of rough seas
without giving up another run until the eighth, more on that later.
From Twins starter Steve Nojima,
it was more of the same as he was extremely adept at getting out
of jams as well, until the 7th that is. Bob Harrington
led off with a single and promptly stole second. After Mike
Baldwin lined out to short, Harrington
took advantage of a napping Nojima and stole third. This brought
Jason "JMash" Masciorini to
the plate, who promptly laid down a perfect bunt with Harrington
crashing down the line, beating the throw and scoring the go ahead
run. The score would remain the same until the aforementioned bottom
of the eighth.
It began with two quick outs, and it appeared
that the Pads would keep their lead until at least the ninth. However,
after Twin Keith Lederer walked and stole second, Baldwin
induced what looked like a pop out to short right field. Unfortunately,
it found an empty patch of grass and fell for a base hit, scoring
the tying run. After the Pads weren't able to take back the lead
in the top of the ninth, despite a leadoff single, again by Bob
Harrington, the Twins came up in the bottom of the ninth. Coming
in to relieve Baldwin, was Pads closer
Jason Gilbert. After getting the first
out, Gilbert ran into some trouble, giving
up a walk and a single, putting runners at first and second.. This
brought Twin Emmet Caven to the plate, who struck a weakly hit ground
ball to Pads second baseman Joe Wilson. It
was a tough play and Wilson had to hurry
in order to get the out at first. Unfortunately the throw was in
the dirt and skipped by Pads first sacker Mike
Ford, allowing the winning run to score from second, giving
the Twins the victory 3-2.
