Game Summary for Padres VS Royals
Sunday May 18th. 2008 at Rancho Cotati High School
In the fourth game of the season, coming
off a disappointing tie game with the Blue
Jays, the Padres faced the last place Royals.
Starting
the game for the Pads, was Jack Marion,
who looked to overcome some the wildness that has plagued him in
the early going this season. After striking out the side in the
first, and making several Royals look silly in the process, it appeared
that he was well on his way. Unfortunately, the Padre hitters were
having trouble putting hits together off Royals Starter, Benjamin
Gaidmore, even though they had plenty of chances. Through the fourth,
they had been given 3 free passes, 4 wild pitches and 4 passed balls
to work with and yet the big inning had eluded them, with the score
2-0 Padres, going into the top of the fifth. Here is where the Friars
nearly let the game get away. After retiring the first two batters,
the next five Royals reached base, scoring four times, to take the
lead 4-2. The most disheartening thing about it was that they had
a couple chances to get the third out, but misplayed the ball, prolonging
the inning. In any case, Marion pitched
well, his line for the day: 5.1IP,
6K, 7H, 2BB, 4R, 1ER.
After a couple scoreless innings, the Pads
came up in the bottom of the 7th, still trailing 4-2. Walls
and Norman lead off with back to back walks,
and after Harrington singled and Fisher
walked, the Royals decided to make a pitching change with the bases
loaded, no outs and clinging to a 4-3 lead. Fortunately for the
Padres, this made thing worse, as 3 more runs came across during
the inning as a result of 2 wild pitches and a passed ball, giving
them a 6-4 lead. Closing the door and getting the victory for the
Friars, was Kevin Kennnedy, who relieved
Marion in the top of the 6th and gave up
only 1ER over 3.2IP with a miniscule 1.09
WHIP. Coming up big for the Friars offensively was Louie
Bruno, who reached base all four times and scored an insurance
run in the bottom of the eighth on Mike Ford's
clutch rocket to the Royals right fielder, making the score 7-5.
In the top of the ninth, there was relatively no drama, which is
just how Padres manager Jason Masciorini
likes it. The Royals got a runner to third with one out, but he
was stranded there, with the final out coming to rest in the Pad's
Shortstop, Hal Norman's glove.
This week we're
introducing a new feature in the Padre's weekly game summary, TWIPB(This
Week In Padre Baseball) notes, completely produced by Friar first
sacker Dave Giugni:
TWIPB Notes
(This week in Padres Baseball)
Mike Ford became the Padres current all-time
Sacrifice Leader with his towering fly ball against the Royals that
would have been gone in a multitude of little league parks around
the country. Of course, without the speed of a tagging Louie Bruno
at third, Mike would not have achieved this honor. So congratulations
to the big MF'er and his 4 Sac's. Don't sit back and relax because
Mash is hot for this stat and he is sitting at 3.
