Game Summary for Padres Vs Phillies
Sunday the 5th of August 2007 at A Place to Play Park
The Padres faced a formidable opponent in this week's match up,
the 35+ Phillies. Starting for the Phillies was junk ball specialist
Kevin Brown, who kept the Pad's hitters off balance for the majority
of the game. However, in the second, he loaded the bases with no
outs and although he minimized the damage, he still gave up 2 runs.
The Pads added a run in the fourth and that would stand up until
the bottom of the seventh, with the score 3-1.
To this point, starter Mike Baldwin, had been great at getting
out of jams all game, as his 1.50 WHIP indicates, only giving up
2 runs. With a runner on third and two outs, a pitch eluded the
grasp of catcher Rios. However, he had managed to get a glove on
it, keeping it close enough to throw to Baldwin covering home for
the apparent tagout, ending the inning. Unfortunately, Baldwin was
spiked on the play, opening a gash on his pitching hand that would
require four stitches to close, putting him on the 15 day DL.
Also, as a result of the collision, the ball came lose and the
runner was ruled safe, tying the game at 3 all. In speaking to the
team doctor off the record this reporter learned that ligament damage
was narrowly avoided and for this, I'm sure Friars skipper JMash
is breathing a little easier as I type this.
Coming
in to stop the bleeding(no pun intended) was Jack Marion, getting
the final out of the inning, and keeping the scored knotted. Coming
up big in the top of the ninth was the dynamic duo of A-Ros and
A-Wag, both turning in great days at the plate(A-Ros 2-2 1R, 1RBI;
A-Wag 3-5 1RBI 1SB). A-Ros led off the inning with a single and
got to second on a wild pitch and then scored on A-Wag's line drive
single to left. It seemed like the startings of a big inning, but
all hopes were dashed as a line drive to third was quickly turned
into an inning ending double play.
The
one run lead would have to hold up, with the Pads winning 4-3 going
into the bottom of the ninth. The bottom of the ninth started off
promisingly, with two fairly routine balls to short and third, however,
an errant throw by third baseman Walls would allow the tying runner
to reach with one out. The Phillies wouldn't go down without a fight,
with the runner stealing second on the next pitch and going to third
after the throw bounded into centerfield, putting the tying run
at third with one out, and forcing the infield to play in. The next
Phil's hitter would line a ball towards short and for a brief moment
it appeared that it would go into left, driving in the tying run,
however, it turned out to be a fairly easy play, as Norman snagged
it with ease. With the defense able to relax a bit, playing back,
another ground ball was hit to third, this time Wall's aim was true,
right to first, capping the Padre victory, moving their record to
5-7, tied for fifth in the division with the Blue Jays, thanks to
a forfeit win over the 35+ Angels.
