Game Summary for Padres VS Blue
Jays
Sunday May 4th. 2008 at A Place to Play Park
In the third game of the season, the Pads
faced the Blue Jays, who prior to this game had lost three closely
contested 1-run games in a row. So they knew that it would be a
tough game against a victory hungry opponent. For the first 3 innings
it seemed to be shaping up as a nice pitcher's duel with the score
knotted at 0. However the Padres finally broke through for a run
in the top of the fourth, although it could have been much more,
having the bases loaded and no outs. Then, the Jays broke through
with a run of their own in the bottom of the 5th and it was 1-1
going into the top of the sixth.
The Pads quickly loaded the bases and up
came Louie Bruno for the second time in
this situation and in this case, he didn't disappoint, ripping a
triple deep into right center, clearing the bases. When Jesse
Walls followed it up with a double, driving in Bruno,
it was 5-1 Pads. Unfortunately, the Blue Jays didn't take this as
a sign to fold like a cheap tent in a hurricane.
In the bottom of the sixth, with two outs
and a runner on first, four straight runners reached base on a walk
and three singles. if not for a great throw from left fielder Jeremy
Fisher to get Nick Macruwsky at third for the last out, it might
been much worse than the three runs they scored. The seventh passed
with both teams unable to score, and the game entered the top of
the eighth with the score 5-4 Friars.
Enter Bob "Clutch"
Harrington: With three ducks on the pond and two outs, he lined
a clean single into the gap in left center, driving in two and providing
his team with a meal consisting of a three run lead. Once again,
however, those pesky Blue Jays wouldn't go away. In the bottom of
the eighth, they started it off with a single, a walk, a double
and a hit batsman before the Pad's manager,
Jason Masciorini decided to make a change and brought in Mike
Baldwin from the bullpen with no outs, runners on first and
third and two runs in. After getting two quick outs, on a sac fly
and a strikeout, the Jays ran themselves out of another inning.
Chris Hendry stole second and then attempted third, however Baldwin
was too smart for him and stepped off and threw to third starting
a pickle, which resulted in an overthrow of Pad's thirdbaseman Jesse
Walls, sending Hendry on an ill-advised attempt for home. I
say ill-advised because the ball bounced off the dugout fence and
came back to Walls who made a perfect throw to Friar's backstop
Louie Bruno who tagged Hendry out for the
third out of the inning and kept the score tied 7-7.
In the top of the ninth, the Pads were able
to pick up two runs to take the lead once again thanks to an error,
a double to left by Pad's centerfielder Andy
"Wags" Wagoner driving in speedy pinch runner Jason
"Flash" Gilbert from second and a single to right
center by Jason Masciorini to drive in
Wags.
So, going into the bottom of the ninth, all
that stood in the way of another Friar victory was three outs. The
first Jay reached on a single, but Baldwin
came up big on the next hitter, striking him out. Then things went
south. First a weak grounder to third looked to produce the second
out of the inning at second by a nose, but was called safe. A somewhat
questionable call, but nothing compared to what followed.
After another hit drove in a run and put
runners at first and third. The second out was procurred on another
Jay baserunning blunder
at home after a wild pitch, however, the runner at first, Chris
Powell, alertly moved to third during the rundown, bringing Blue
Jay Mike Abbadessa to the plate with two outs. On the second pitch,
Abbadessa hit a hard groundball to third. Unfortunately, the throw
was up the line, but Pad's firstbaseman Dave
Giugni made an athletic play going down to snag the throw and
tag a leaping Abbadessa for the apparent third out ending the game.
However, for some inexplicable reason, the second base ump called
him safe, allowing the run to score, tying the game! Giugni
pretty much summed up the teams feelings, saying "Oh my god!
You've got to be be f$%%ing kidding me! That's the most f***ing
bulls*** call I've ever seen!" What transpired next was even
more unbelievable.
Appealing the obviously horrible call, Pad's
manager asked the second base ump to get help from the home plate
blue, who immediately signalled the out sign, ending the game, and
giving the Pads the win, right? WRONG!!!! His official call was
that Giugni missed the tag going to first,
and got him after he took a step towards second, which clearly didn't
happen. This meant that the run scored before the third out, resulting
in a tie game. ARRRGGHHHH!!!!!
Final Score: Padres
9 - Blue Jays 9
