Game Summary for Padres VS Cubs
Sunday July 13th. 2008 at Montgomery High School

In the eleventh game of the year, the Pads faced the biggest test yet in the 3rd season of their existence, in the Cubs, who were 10-1 and in first place coming into the game. The Cubs have not just one, but two stud pitchers that have had stellar years to this point, and runs would be at a premium. Dan Wood got the start and on paper, he seems to be the lesser of two evils, however, the Pads might beg to differ with that theory, based on the way he pitched on Sunday. Although, it seemed at times that the Pads would break through for some runs off of him, but unfortunately, the big hit never appeared. Probably the closest they came was in the third, with runners on second and third. A blooper off Norman’s bat seemed destined for short center, however, the Cubs second baseman G. Carmona, made a nice play up the middle to catch the ball, falling down in the grass and holding the runners.

For the Pads, Kevin “K2” Kennedy got the start. He is one of the Pads two All Stars this year, along with Jesse "JDogg" Walls, and has pitched very well despite being out of the game for a year with shoulder problems. This game was no exception, until the sixth with the Cubs clinging to a 3-0 lead, having held off several Friar threats, K2 seemed to tire and lost his control briefly. He gave up a couple hits and uncharacteristic walks before getting it back together and inducing a couple popups to short and third, ending the inning after giving up three. This would prove to be his last inning of work, his line for the day: 6IP, 10H, 6ER, 3BB. Coming in to relieve for the Friars, was Jack Marion, who was pitching in his last game this year, before shipping out to Iraq on June 17th. Jack finished his year in style, with three scoreless innings, giving the Pads a chance to come back. Unfortunately for the Friar faithful, the difficulties scoring runs would continue throughout the game. The Cubs dual aces managed to make the big pitch all day, getting out of jams almost every inning, as the Pads left 11 on base and 9 of them in scoring position. Wood pitching well enough to shut out the Pads over his 6 innings of work and Keane came in and shut the door over the last three, making the final score Cubs 6, Pads 0.
